Chocolate Sheet Cake

A family favorite and the recipe of my great grandmother!

Ingredients
  

CAKE:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cubes butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 TBSP cocoa powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp baking soda

FROSTING:

  • 1 cube butter
  • 6 TBSP milk
  • 4 TBSP cocoa powder
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions
 

CAKE:

  • In a large bowl mix flour and sugar. In a saucepan, combine the butter, cocoa powder and water, bring to a rapid boil. Then pour over the flour & sugar mixture. Mix well. Add eggs, vanilla, buttermilk & baking soda. Mix well then pour on a greased and floured jelly roll pan (15 ½ x 10 ½ inches). Bake for 20 minutes at 400 degrees. Five minutes before the cake is done, prepare the icing.

ICING:

  • In a saucepan, bring to boil the butter, milk and cocoa powder. Once these items have come to a rapid boil, add in powdered sugar and vanilla and mix well. Pour this frosting over the cake while the cake is still hot.
